Acclaimed director Bong Joon-Ho (Snowpiercer, Okja) explores themes of class and inequality in this genre-bending comedy / drama / thriller – the first Korean film to win the Palme d’Or at Cannes.
Ki-taek is a good-for-nothing, unemployed family man, patriarch of a family of grifters who live in an overcrowded, sordid basement. The wealthy Parks, on the other hand, live in a fabulous house. When, due to an unexpected stroke of luck, Ki-taek’s son is hired by the Parks to be the private English tutor to their daughter, the destinies of the two families cross and the rest of Ki-taek’s family members gradually insinuate themselves into the Park household. The explosive results expose the merciless evils of class inequalities, culminating in a powerful and utterly original outcome.
“”Parasite” is so perfectly calibrated that there’s joy to be had in just experiencing every confident frame of it, but then that’s tempered by thinking about what Bong is unpacking here and saying about society, especially with the perfect, absolutely haunting final scenes.” – Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.com
