In this long awaited second feature by director Debra Granik (Winter’s Bone), a father and his thirteen year-old daughter live an ideal existence in the wilderness, when suddenly their lives are forever changed.
For years, a teenage girl (Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie, in a breakout performance) and her psychologically fragile veteran father (Ben Foster) have lived undetected in Forest Park, a vast woods on the edge of Portland, Oregon. When a careless mistake catches the attention of the authorities, the pair is removed from the park — forcing them to confront their conflicting desire to be part of a community and their fierce need for independence.
Adapted from Peter Rock’s novel My Abandonment by Academy Award nominated screenwriter Anne Rosellini (Winter’s Bone), and inspired by an actual case, LEAVE NO TRACE is one of the most talked about films coming out of Sundance this year.
“It speaks in hushed voices, makes few fast moves and requires the viewer to infer a lot about its characters — and also to fear for their safety.” – Peter Howell, Toronto Star
